Images of green

Dear friends,

A two month break for holidays and sun and reading and chilling out (and hardly any writing), and now two reasons to celebrate.  Firstly, my book is going to be published !!!  And all thanks to my website – Christian Education publishers found me on it and approached me about the book.  No details have been finalised so I will keep you informed.  Secondly, it is a year since I launched my website http://www.janeupchurch.co.uk/ so who knows what this second year will bring?

We are at the end of summer, the autumn already muscling in with the wind, and feelings are mixed with the loss of open skies and days yet the sweetness of fruits that we and nature have started to store.  This is a piece of summer colour that looks forward to the need for storing our sunlit memories.

Images of green

Journeys take you out of yourself, out of your normal landscape and its often-heard music.  Today I saw poppies, bright splashes of red to surprise the green, growing in patches on verges and here and there, oh joy, in swathes on country fields.  Here and there, too, a cluster of white, elderflowers like large lace buttonholes of clotted cream, and swaying wildflowers waving above the grass and bracken.  But today’s palette is green

Another summer holiday piece before we are filled to the brim with autumn, this one a poem.

Umbria

Thanks and oh yes
for this bright-folding day
green-girdled and sun-stretched,
heavy with lazy stillness,

And lastly a poem I wrote for Wordlive on Jesus as the scapegoat, famously painted by Holman Hunt, found in Leviticus 16.1-22.

The Scapegoat

The wilderness calls.
I can hear the flap of its canvas,
feel the drought in its breath,
smell the baked bark of stone
as it burns in the boiling sun.
It is not home
